Albert James GORRINGE was born 28 April 1925 in Brighton, Sussex. He was the third child of Albert GORRINGE and Louisa GEARING. He had two elder sisters, Bessie and May with two younger brothers, William and Victor following.

Serving in the Royal Marines during World War II, Albert received medals including the War Medal, the Burma Star, the 1939-1945 Star and the Pacific Clasp. A card sent to his sister, May, shows that at some point he was on board HMS Howe.

In June 1947, Albert married Marcelle ELTON-WALTERS in her home town of Brading, Isle of Wight. They went on to have six children, living in Brighton where Albert worked as a bus driver.

Albert died 15 November 1975 at the age of fifty.

  1. Albert served aboard HMS Howe from 1944- 1945 in the pacific on Operation Iceberg and the Invasion of Okinawa. He won a competition for shooting a passing seam mine! He toured through Australia and New Zealand, and the ship stopped in Durban, S.A on the way home. The declaration of peace was signed in Tokyo Harbour on a Mess table borrowed from HMS King George V, with a green baize felt from HMS Howe over it (complete with coffee cup stains) as the antique table which was acquired especially for the occasion - did not fit the enormous ledgers that needed to be signed!. He later went on to be a bus conductor, and driver, where he met my grandmother in Brighton when she asked him for some loose change for her card game with her work friends!.
